STEVEN M. GEISZLER

Steven focuses on intellectual property law—particularly global patent licensing, litigation, and strategic advice.

For the first 15 years of his career, Steven worked as an associate then partner in the Dallas offices of three international firms: Jones Day, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, and Dentons.  His practice centered around high-stakes patent litigation in venues such as the Eastern District of Texas, District of Delaware, and U.S. International Trade Commission.  During that period, Steven appeared as counsel of record in approximately 100 federal lawsuits, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in all stages of litigation, from pre-suit investigation through trial and appeal.  Steven’s efforts and successes were recognized by such publications as Chambers, Best Lawyers in America, and Super Lawyers.

In late 2016, Steven joined China’s premier telecommunications and electronics company, initially as US Chief IP Litigation Counsel, then later as US Chief IP Counsel.  During his tenure, Steven managed approximately 80 lawsuits, including multimillion-dollar FRAND disputes.  For an in-house counsel, Steven took a hands-on approach, often litigating defensive patent cases as counsel of record without hiring outside counsel.  His litigation strategies yielded many defensive wins, including multiple $0 resolutions.  Steven’s work on offensive patent litigation also garnered international attention.  Although his primary responsibility was for the United States, he helped manage global disputes and assisted with overseas litigation.  Steven also managed number trade secret investigations and lawsuits, including multiple high-profile trials.

Since 2022, Steven has focused more on patent licensing, particularly standard essential patents.  He has been a key team member on dozens of patent-licensing projects that contributed a substantial licensing income, most completed without litigation.  Steven also works closely with patent pool administrators, coordinating on licensing programs in the fields of 4G/5G Automotive, Wi-Fi, Video Codecs, and Audio Codecs.  His licensing work has been recognized by inclusion in IAM Strategy 300 and World IP Review's Global In-House Elite.

Steven has spoken about patent licensing and litigation at major conferences, including IPBC Global, IPBC Asia, Eastern District of Texas Bench Bar Conference, Hansen IP Institute at Fordham Law School, IPWatchdog Live, IAM Automotive USA, and Boston College Law School International IP Summit.  He has guest lectured at law schools including Baylor Law School, University of Texas Law School, and Peking University School of Transnational Law.  Steven is a member of the Sedona Conference’s Working Group 9, which fosters discussion among judges, lawyers, and professors about ways to improve and clarify the law of patent damages and remedies.

Steven is a proponent of mediation, using that mechanism to resolve many licensing and litigation matters.  He also is an advocate for the use of “big data” analytics (particularly platforms such as Lex Machina) to manage litigation.  Steven has been interviewed and quoted in publications like IAM, IPWatchdog, Corporate Counsel, Managing IP, and Texas Lawyer, and he has appeared on Bloomberg TV.

Steven is a native of Snyder, Oklahoma, and graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Biology and a Chemistry minor.  He then spent three years as a biomedical researcher in the Molecular Host Defense Laboratory at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he worked on a gene-therapy project and assisted with other tasks, such as the development of monoclonal antibodies and novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs).  Steven then attended the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating with a J.D. in 2001.  At UVA Law, he was a research assistant to Professor Clarisa Long and president of the school’s Federalist Society chapter.
